Intruder Alarms vs CCTV: Do You Need Both?

It’s one of the most common questions I get asked when I’m out doing surveys: “Should I get an alarm, a CCTV system, or both?”

The honest answer is that they do very different jobs — and for most homes and businesses, the strongest protection comes from having both working together. But there are situations where one makes more sense to prioritise over the other, and I want to give you a straightforward breakdown so you can make the right decision for your property.

What Does an Intruder Alarm Actually Do?

An intruder alarm is designed to detect and respond to a break-in as it happens. When a door contact is triggered or a PIR (passive infrared) motion sensor detects movement inside your property, the alarm activates — typically sounding a siren and, in the case of a monitored system, alerting a response centre or the keyholder directly.

The key benefit is immediacy. An alarm doesn’t wait for you to review footage later. It reacts the moment something happens and — crucially — it makes a lot of noise. That alone is often enough to send an opportunistic burglar running.

The deterrent effect is well documented. Research shows that 60% of convicted burglars say they would avoid a property if they knew it had an alarm system — and most burglaries in the UK are opportunistic, meaning visible security measures are often all it takes to make a criminal move on to an easier target.

What Does CCTV Do That an Alarm Can’t?

CCTV approaches security from a different angle. Rather than responding to a break-in, cameras observe, record, and deter.

A well-positioned CCTV system gives you:

  • ✅ Visual evidence — footage that can be used by police and in court to identify and prosecute offenders
  • ✅ Passive deterrence — the visible presence of cameras is enough to discourage many criminals from approaching your property in the first place. Studies show homes with CCTV are 300% less likely to be broken into compared to those without
  • ✅ Remote monitoring — modern IP camera systems let you check your property from your phone in real time, from anywhere in the world
  • ✅ Coverage outside the building — alarms only activate once someone is inside or has breached an entry point. CCTV covers your driveway, gates, perimeter, and outbuildings around the clock

What CCTV doesn’t do on its own is create an immediate, audible response. If a burglar is experienced enough not to be deterred by cameras, the footage is invaluable afterwards — but the break-in still happens.

The Weakness of Each System on Its Own

I’ve seen what happens when people rely on just one or the other, and there are gaps in both approaches.

Alarm only, no CCTV: The alarm goes off. The burglar runs. But without cameras, you often have no footage, no identification, and very little chance of police finding who was responsible. Insurers are also increasingly asking for CCTV evidence when processing claims.

CCTV only, no alarm: The cameras are rolling. But there’s nothing to stop the break-in happening, no audible deterrent, and no immediate alert unless you happen to be watching a live feed at the exact moment someone walks in.

In England and Wales alone, there were 245,284 recorded burglaries between March 2024 and March 2025. The properties most likely to be targeted are those with no visible signs of security — no bell box, no cameras, no deterrent of any kind.

Why the Combination Is the Gold Standard

When an intruder alarm and CCTV system are installed together, they cover each other’s weaknesses completely.

The alarm deters, detects, and responds. The cameras record everything, provide the evidence needed for prosecution, and extend your coverage beyond the four walls of the building. Research confirms that a combination of security measures — including CCTV, alarms, and good door and window locks — can provide up to 52 times more protection against burglary compared to a property with no security at all.

For businesses, the case is even stronger. Commercial premises with properly installed alarm systems experience 60–70% fewer break-ins, and CCTV provides the additional benefit of protecting against employee theft, liability claims, and incidents that happen during opening hours — things an intruder alarm simply doesn’t cover.

What If Budget Is a Factor?

I understand that not everyone can do everything at once, and I’d always rather give honest advice than push someone into spending more than they need to right now.

Here’s how I’d think about it:

  • ✅ If you’re primarily worried about break-ins to your home, start with an intruder alarm. The deterrent effect is immediate and the cost is manageable — our wireless packages start from £420 installed
  • ✅ If you run a business and need to monitor staff areas, protect stock, and have footage for insurance purposes, CCTV is likely the higher priority
  • ✅ If you want complete peace of mind, or you’ve already had an attempted break-in, I’d always recommend both — and we can often package them together at a better combined price than buying separately

What We Install at Duke

At Duke Security Systems, we install fully wireless Hikvision CCTV systems and wireless intruder alarm packages across Peterborough and the surrounding area. Our alarm packages include PIR motion detectors, door contacts, a mobile app for remote arming and disarming, a 2-year warranty, and first-year remote servicing — all with no ongoing contracts.

Our CCTV systems use Hikvision’s latest ColorVu and AcuSense technology, giving you full-colour night footage, human and vehicle detection, and remote app access — all installed to a professional standard with full cable management and trunking.

We can install both systems together and ensure they’re configured to complement each other properly — not just two separate systems bolted onto the same building.

The Bottom Line

Intruder alarms and CCTV are not competitors — they’re partners. An alarm responds to a break-in. CCTV records it, deters it, and extends your protection far beyond what an alarm can achieve on its own.

The Difference Between Cheap CCTV and a Professional Installation

That four-camera kit on Amazon looks tempting — but before you buy, there’s something worth knowing. UK experts estimate that nearly half of all CCTV cameras capture footage so poor it’s worthless in court, and a Home Office report found that over 80% of footage submitted to police can’t be used for investigative purposes. In this guide, I explain exactly where cheap CCTV falls short, why it can affect your insurance cover, and what a professionally installed system actually gives you that a kit from the internet simply can’t.
