A guide to CCTV Storage

CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras are an essential tool for many businesses and organisations, providing enhanced security and surveillance capabilities. However, the footage generated by CCTV cameras can quickly add up, creating a need for efficient and effective storage solutions. In this blog post, we will explore the different types of CCTV storage and considerations for selecting the right one for your needs.

Types of CCTV Storage

There are two main types of CCTV storage: on-premises and cloud-based.

On-premises CCTV Storage:

On-premises storage solutions refer to a system where the CCTV footage is stored locally on a server or a network-attached storage (NAS) device. This solution provides the benefit of complete control over the storage system, including hardware selection, backup, and data recovery. However, it also requires an investment in physical storage hardware and the associated infrastructure, such as backup power and cooling systems.

Cloud-based CCTV Storage:

Cloud-based storage solutions, on the other hand, refer to a system where the CCTV footage is uploaded to remote servers over the internet. This solution eliminates the need for on-premises hardware and the associated infrastructure costs, providing a more scalable and cost-effective option. However, it does require a reliable internet connection and ongoing subscription costs to maintain the cloud storage service.

Considerations for Selecting CCTV Storage

When selecting a CCTV storage solution, several considerations should be taken into account, including the following:

Storage Capacity:

One of the most critical factors to consider when selecting CCTV storage is the storage capacity required. This will depend on the number of cameras being used, the resolution of the footage, and the retention period required. It is important to select a storage solution that can accommodate your current and future needs.

When designing any system, you should run a calculation to determine the storage needs of the design.

Compression:

Video compression refers to the process of reducing the size of a video file by removing redundant and irrelevant data while maintaining an acceptable level of quality. The primary goal of video compression is to reduce the amount of data needed to store or transmit a video while minimizing the loss of visual quality.

Video compression is essential for CCTV as it keeps storage costs reasonable. Without it, it would be impractical to store high-quality videos due to the large size of the video files.

H.264 is a widely used video compression standard that is commonly used for CCTV.

H.264 uses various techniques to compress video, such as inter-frame prediction, intra-frame prediction, variable block size, and more. These techniques enable H.264 to compress video to a smaller size while maintaining a high-quality image.

Since the release of H.264, the industry has gone-on to produce the codec H.265.

H.265 provides better compression efficiency than H.264, which means that it can compress a video to a smaller file size while maintaining the same level of quality. H.265 can achieve up to 50% more compression than H.264, which is particularly useful for high-resolution video formats like 4K and 8K.

Security:

Security is another essential consideration when selecting a CCTV storage solution. On-premises storage provides greater control over the security of the footage, but it is also more susceptible to physical threats. Cloud-based storage, on the other hand, provides enhanced security measures, such as encryption and data redundancy, but there is a risk of data breaches if the service is not secured correctly.

Accessibility:

It is important to consider who needs access to the CCTV footage and how they will access it. On-premises storage provides more control over access but requires physical access to the storage device. Cloud-based storage, on the other hand, provides more flexibility in accessing footage from anywhere with an internet connection.

Cost:

Cost is an important consideration when selecting a CCTV storage solution. On-premises storage requires an investment in hardware and infrastructure, while cloud-based storage requires ongoing subscription costs. It is important to select a solution that is both scalable and cost-effective for your needs.

Conclusion

CCTV storage is an essential component of any CCTV system, providing a secure and efficient way to store and access footage. When selecting a CCTV storage solution, it is important to consider the storage capacity required, security, accessibility, and cost. Whether you choose an on-premises or cloud-based solution, selecting the right CCTV storage solution for your needs will ensure your surveillance system operates at its best.
